A change of Career

A good friend of mine who lives back in the UK recently declared to me that at the age of 40, he and his wife have decided they are going to change their lives. Totally.

They are selling up their flat in London, taking the proceeds and moving to Denver Colorado, buying a house outright with the proceeds and doing a complete life / career change. She’s an American, so he gets his green card – there are no worries there – and he’s just going to dump what he’s been doing for the past 20 years and go in a completely different direction.

Hell, no mortgage? I’d contemplate that myself.

The trouble is, I honestly don’t know if I’d be good for anything else. I Love making games (more than playing them, truth be told) and I don’t know that I could ever give up coding cos making machines do what I want them to is a powerful feeling. If I could make my family do what I want them to, maybe I could give it up. But I married Attilla the Hun and have Curious George for a daughter, so I guess I won’t be holding my breath over that one.

So, if I *had* to give up making games, what else could I do? I know I couldn’t entertain any aspect of the medical industry. I don’t even know what my kidneys look like – I sure don’t want to look at yours. Plus, if I leave a bug in games software, no one dies.

Hmmm. I think I could handle Radio. Anyone who knows me knows I love to talk (?hat? Nooo!!) so talk Radio is a definite possibility.
I might give being an author a go – I have almost finished my first book, which is more a “can I do this?” rather than “Is this any good?” situation. I doubt it’s going to be that great a read but whatever.

I think Television might be an idea – making a TV show could be a lot of fun – I imaging there must be a lot of the same putting-out-fires skills involved in that as their is making games.

I dunno. It’s not likely I will find myself in that situation, but it can be fun to dream, right?
